Florida Fishing Charter FAQs: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Have questions before you book your fishing trip in Cedar Key, Suwannee, Steinhatchee, or Waccasassa? You’re not alone! Whether it’s your first time hiring a fishing guide or you’re a seasoned angler, this FAQ page covers the most common things guests ask me before hopping aboard.

From what to wear and what’s included to booking policies and trip types, I’ve got you covered.

Do you only fish out of Cedar Key, FL?

No! Captain Travis offers guided trips all along the big bend area of the Gulf Coast. He most often launches out of Cedar Key, Suwannee Town, Horseshoe, or Steinhatchee for all of his guided saltwater charters. For freshwater charters Capt. Travis will travel to many different lakes and rivers throughout North Central Florida.

If you are staying in one of the quaint towns along the Gulf, Captain Travis will work hard to coordinate with your location. While we regularly meet clients that are staying in Cedar Key, Suwannee Town, Horseshoe beach, and Steinhatchee we try to pick a destination where the fish are biting best. For your best chances at a large redfish, trout, or snook you will want to follow the fish!

How many people can you take?

All of our fishing charters are designed for 1-4 clients to maximize casting opportunities. We want to ensure that our clients will receive our full attention!

Is this a private fishing charter?

Yes! You will be the only party on the boat during your fishing adventure with Captain Travis Blucher. We believe that our anglers deserve our full attention!

What’s included in my fishing charter with Capt. Travis?

When you book a trip, I provide:

  • Fishing licenses for everyone
  • Rods, reels, bait, tackle, and all gear
  • Fly fishing gear upon request
  • Cooler with ice and bottled water
  • Fish cleaning and bagging if you want to keep your catch

You just bring yourself, your snacks, and sun protection!

How much do your guided fishing trips cost?

Fishing charters start around $350 to $550 depending on the type of trip you are interested in and how many people will be included. For more detailed information on the price of our guided fishing trips click here!

Are tips required?

You do not have to tip, however it is highly appreciated if you do! If you feel that your fishing guide worked hard to help you catch fish, 10-20% is the customary amount when tipping fishing charter captains.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Weather cancellations are at the discretion of the captain. Fish will still bite in the rain but our first priority is our clients safety! If it is lightning, heavy downpours, or high winds, we will make the greatest effort to reschedule your trip quickly.

Can we keep the fish that we catch?

Catch and release is encouraged to help maintain Florida’s fisheries. However, if you would like to keep your catch to eat we recommend bringing a small cooler with ice or ice packs to keep in your car. Captain Travis Blucher will clean and package your fish for you to take home, at no additional cost.

What should I bring on the trip?

To get the most out of your day on the water, I recommend bringing:

  • Sunscreen (reef-safe is best)
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Hat or sun-protective clothing
  • Snacks or lunch (especially for longer trips)
  • Any drinks you’d like
  • Motion sickness medication (if needed)
  • A small cooler to take home cleaned fish
Are your charters family-friendly or kid-friendly?

Yes! I love taking families fishing and offer beginner-friendly, laid-back trips perfect for kids. I’ll tailor the experience based on your group’s experience level and attention span, whether we’re targeting Redfish in the shallows or just enjoying some catch-and-release fun.

What time do trips start?

Start times vary depending on tides, weather, and the season. Once you book, I’ll contact you directly to confirm the best departure time for your specific charter.

How long are your fishing charters?

Most trips run half-day (4–5 hours) or full-day (6–8 hours). I also offer custom packages for fly fishing, tarpon trips, or sunset outings. Let me know what you’re looking for when you book.

Do I need fishing experience?

Not at all! My trips are great for all levels. I’ll provide instructions, help with casting or reeling, and share local tips and techniques to help you catch fish and have fun.

What types of fish can we catch?

Depending on the season and location, we often target:

  • Redfish
  • Spotted sea trout
  • Snook
  • Tarpon
  • Tripletail
  • Black drum
  • Bass and speckled perch (on freshwater trips)

If you have a specific target species, let me know, I’ll do my best to put you on the bite.

How do I book a fishing charter?

You can book online here or contact me directly. Once booked, I’ll reach out with final details and exact departure info.

Still Have Questions?

If you don’t see your question answered here, feel free to text, call, or email me directly. I want you to feel completely comfortable and excited before you ever step on the boat.
